Since term 1, Xuan has been having weekly spelling and thanks goodness, Xuan has gotten full mark every week. From the spelling list, Xuan is able to write simple sentences now. She has also learned quite a lot of grammar rules. Spelling, comprehension, vocabularly, grammar is a must acquired skill before entering primary school now. Thankfully, Xuan is able to read independently now. But she is not too confident to write short sentences to make a short story though.
For Chinese, Xuan has started her exposure to Han Yu Pin Yin since Term 1. So far, she seems doing alright. Soon in term 3, she will start her Chinese spelling. For the moment, the teacher does impromptu spelling with the children as a revision without a formal list given to parents. Together with berries, we hope it will be a smooth transition. According to the Chinese teacher during the meet parent session, Xuan is doing well and should not have a problem transiting to P1.
Math is another big area. Numberacy skill don’t come as naturally as language to Xuan although I must say Xuan has shown vast improvement. And because her previous preschool who adopted a very relaxed australian learning style has not even moved to addition, subtraction at K1, Xuan has quite a lot to catch up even though she attended a term of Montessori math to prepare her for this current preschool. Her exposure to addition is purely from coaching at home then.
However, it can be tough to ask her to do it again and again when the subject is obviously not her favourite.
While Xuan can read independently and can do most math questions, we need to work on her concentration level. Her ability to focus and finish work timely is not consistent as yet. Sometimes, she can finish very well and even 1st in class, at times, she dudn't manage to complete. Mummy believes that this has to do with a lot self discipline and self motivation. While she can focus very well on her favorite activities (reading, art and crafts..), her attention focus drifted at times when doing serious homework.
We hope that as Xuan reaches 6 years old and with continuous effort on reminding, encouraging and maybe rewards at times(no choice) will see results. :D
Xuan can do it! Jia you!
