Term 1 review

Xuan came back with a folder of progress report and mini assessment "test" papers for all subject on the last day of term 1.

We are very glad to see that Xuan has done well and has put in her due effort as promised. Compared to initial weeks of school term, Xuan has settled down well. She knows the expectations from school better now eg. to finish a piece of work on time and well.

There are various assessment categories for all subjects. Each category has a long comprehensive checklist where the child is graded from average, good, excellent to very competent.

For english, Xuan scores competent in reading, grammar, vocabularly and poetry recitation. Teacher commented that Xuan put in a good effort for the show and tell except that she was a bit too soft. Penmanship was given an average. The penmanship was graded based on a written assignment back in end January. Xuan has shown consiousness in improving her handwriting after repeated reminders and encouragement in recent weeks.

Xuan did a great job for Math final review paper and get full mark (:D). Continue the hard work and consistency. Rememeber that practise makes perfect and there is no shortcut to good result, dear daughter.

Xuan also did a good job for Chinese. She was given competent grade for listen, read and speak categories. The read and speak category was conducted like a formal oral session like what mommy and papa used to have during their school days. However, teacher would like Xuan to improve on her penmanship! :p

Actually, Xuan could write neatly especially after repeated reminders and "warnings" from mommy. So it is a matter of whether she put in that due effort when doing her work in school. So we know that, more daily reminders and "warnings" are still needed in term 2.:p

At the end of term 2, the children will be assessed and band into "bridging, core and higher chinese" for Chinese lesson. We hope that Xuan continues to put in her best effort and could join the higher chinese band. For that, the child needs to be competent in all 4 areas of listen, speak, read and write with more emphasis on listen and speak. Jia you Xuan!!

From term 2, all assessments will be graded. From the term 2 spelling list, we could see the marked difference in expectations too. From a very kind weekly 5 words to 10 words per week. And, out of the 10 words, 4 of them come in 2 words e.g. collecting pollen. So in actual fact, there are 14 words per week. Ting xie also comes in chinese characters cum hanyu pinyin.

It's alright, dear Xuan. Like what mommy and papa always say, no matter what the result is, most importantly, we done our best and have worked hard! :D

Overall, well done Xuan and all the best to your learning years!
